About Barry
Barry Gillions is a passionate artisan potter and printmaker based in the Staffordshire Moorlands. For the past 45 years he has been hand crafting unique ranges of stoneware ceramics.
Craftsmanship
Each hand-made and initialled piece is an individual result of the creative combination of clay, glaze and fire. Barry also produces groups of ceramics related by form, decoration and colour.
Many of the stunning effects are achieved by the fusing of the clay body with underlying slips and surface glazes, often enhanced by decorative scratching through these layers.
Inspiration
Barry’s work is influenced by the diverse history of ceramics, taking key elements from the work of Bernard Leach, the studio pottery revival of the 20th century, and the works of Hans Coper and Lucie Rie.
Inspiration still comes from a truly memorable visit to the Chinese pottery capital of Jingdezhen. The meeting of Eastern and Western traditions continues to provide an endless reference bank.
